As Charlie said in the previous post about the Bristol accent, with its suffixed 'l',
Diana Wynne Jones in one of her books tells of a Bristol woman whose daughters were called Norma, Eva and Ida - hence, Normal, Evil and Idle......which reminds me of a story of a couple of students discussing post-graduation plans, while they were at the pub.
One of them announced their intention to work with VSO in Africa.
"'Ere, you don't want to go there," said the landlord. "Africal's a malarial areal."
That looks very like an HMV dog that's missing its gramophone :=)
ReplyDeletethat's Nipper, that is. Proper Brizzle, Nipper is. Well, was.
ReplyDeleteDon't you mean Nipperl?
ReplyDeleteLucy (in friv mood)
Instant tongue twisters. We've got a "Maison au Chien" with a dog perched on the top here, you can't see it, it's too high up and the streets are too narrow.
ReplyDeleteBristol and la Rochelle have a lot in common - mainly the slave trade unfortunately. No extra 'l's here.
He's just sad because he failed the audition for this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48028479@N00/102253599/
ReplyDeleteI remember realising that the French must have had something of a slave trade when I was looking at rum in a Carrefour; it all came from French colonies of the West Indies. Then felt I like some watcher of the skies when a new planet swims into her ken... I quite like rum.
ReplyDeletethanks for that, Charlie; I've not seen that before. I don't know Bedmo as well as it deserves to be known.
