badger

This day last year we were walking in Dartmoor and swimming in a stream. Today was far too cold for that sort of thing, so I painted this picture instead. Nothing like finishing a painting to cheer you up. Which, after a gloomy weekend, is a Good Thing.

Here's a Palm Sunday joke, from Giraldus Cambrensis. At least, I suspect that it was a joke, but he used it as an example of the poor standard of Latin among the clergy in Wales. You never can tell with Gerald.

Item exemplum de presbytero qui locum ilium Evangelii : "Si quis vobis aliquid dixerit, dicite quia Dominus habet his opus" de lectoris herba exposuit in hunc modum: "Dicite quia Dominus habet herbam illam quae vocatur hisopus."

  2. loosely translated-

There was the priest took this part of the gospel "if anyone asks you, say that your master has need of it (the donkey that Jesus was to ride to Jerusalem) and explained it thus: "Say that your master has a herb called hyssop"
