putting out more flags

They're mad for football in Henleaze, let me tell you. The supermarionation fisherman, in the window at the fishmongers on North View, is now waving a shiny new Engerland flag (rather more stolidly than enthusiastically, though, it has to be said). The fishmonger explained that he had been presented with the flag by his neighbour, the Portuguese hairdresser.

And here is a recreation of Montgomery's triumphal advance into Benghazi.

can you see what's wrong in this picture?

..after I had taken this photo, I saw that I was being observed by a man of indeterminate age, sitting on a bench behind me. According to the insignia on his baseball cap, he was an Admiral of the United States Navy. Perhaps he was on shore leave.

"Do you often take photos of phone boxes?" he asked.

"Oh, yes," I replied. "Do you?"

"Oh, I take pictures of the usual things," he said, without explaining what they were.

I congratulated him.

Another vuvuzela limerick, and then it'll be out of my system.

A young man blew his vuvuzela
Too loud and too close to a sailor.
His come-uppance, it's reckoned,
Was like Edward the Second's,
Or a victim of Vlad the Impaler.

  1. I love "Montgomery's triumphal advance"! Promising name for a tune, I reckon, ranking with "The 79th's Farewell to Gibraltar" and "The 3.141593's Farewell to Euclidian Geometry" [Bob Goddard wrote that last one but I may have remembered the wrong number].

  2. Well put.

Phone boxes? What about the letter boxes? Very red.

  3. I think it's wonderful that you still have phone boxes. Here in the US, phone booths, as we called them were replaced decades ago with open air payphones. Now, most of those are disappearing, because nearly everyone has a mobile phone. Even the street corner mailboxes are disappearing. The US Postal Service says they don't collect enough letters anymore, to justify their existence.

    Cute poem!

  4. He'll never get up that hill carrying that tree trunk!
Anyway the "En-ger-land Chicken" would be better.
Is there and equivalent buggy coming down the hill with German flags on, in a Rommell-Monty style face off?

  5. ...let us not forget Napoleon's Farewell To His Horse, Delia.

He *was* a full-blown Admiral, perhaps the letterboxes were beneath his dignity, Anji.

A lot of the phone boxes now announce that they don't take cash, Melissa. And we do get open-air phone boxes too, but what with our climate, the old-fashioned ones can be handy on a dark and stormy night. Though it's years since I last used one.

I suppose the chap recreating Rommel's role would be trundling along the A38 in the direction of the airport, Claire. But yes, it's a shame that the Engerland chicken isn't taking off as I'd hoped. People just aren't patriotic enough, I reckon.

The 'something wrong' in the picture is that flag is upside-down.
