starting up again

My birthday is near as heck the same as Imbolc, or Candlemas, so we combined the two and went off to the reed beds at Aust to make a Bridget's Cross.

And then we went hunting for a fish and chip shop, because we like to celebrate birthdays in style. Severn Beach has nothing to offer the hungry reveller, but Avonmouth has not only an Indian restaurant but a pizza parlour, a Co-op and a chip/kebab shop. So that was all right.

I've been unwell, hence the inactivity on the blog. B did some acupuncture on me a few days ago, and it was really useful. I am now swimming back to the surface.

And, as Imbolc marks, the world is coming to life again after the snow and ice. There are snowdrops, there are daffodils on the kitchen table, and I saw a black-headed gull in its new season's balaclava.

  1. Sorry to hear you have been under the weather, Dru... I hope it was nothing serious.

Hate the idea of having needles stuck in me at the best of times, so the thought of acupuncture makes me shiver.

  6. Happy birthday and recovery, Dru! I thought Katie was you for a second until I clicked to enlarge the photo. I haven't seen or heard of flowers here yet, but picked a bunch of kale and a collard leaf from under a blinding crust of snow to have with my chips and bacon today, while listening for the sound of a serpent amid light-hearted singing and playing by the Mellstock Band (advertising their recent performance at the Church at Aust).

  7. Hi everyone! Thank you. Blimey, Larry, I hadn't realised the Mellstock Band were playing Aust, otherwise I'd certainly have been there. Must keep a closer eye on the radar..

  8. It was your mention of Aust that made me want to read more about it; thus my serendipitous discovery of Mellstock and their carolling there last December. And since I'm a fan of Sacred Harp singing and its relatives, and of Thomas Hardy's poetry, I was happy to find links from the MB to the West Gallery tradition and its revival.
